Phoenix Brass Annual Dinner and Awards Evening
Phoenix Brass recently celebrated its 13th annual awards evening when members, supporters and friends gathered at the John O’Gaunt Community Technology College, Hungerford.
Mr Roger Dewey, Chairman, Phoenix Brass welcomed the guests of the evening. These included one of the Band’s Vice Presidents, Lieutenant Commander Mark Sheldon RN and his wife, Karen, both of whom have been enthusiastic supporters of the band ever since his involvement with the affiliation to HMS Marlborough. Mark has recently been promoted to Lieutenant Commander and is shortly due to command HMS Lancaster, a type 23 Frigate.
Guests of honour were Mr David Hayward and his wife, Sarah. A former resident conductor of SWT Woodfalls Band for more than six years, David began his banding many years ago in Wales with his local colliery band, before eventually playing for the famous Sun Life Band. His band training skills are in increasing demand amongst bands throughout the South and West Country, as is his enthusiasm for compèring concerts and contests as well as adjudicating. Addressing the diners he spoke of brass banding and ‘Friends for Life’, a theme already that was prominent in Andrea Newcombes’ excellent display, (she must have a crystal ball), before toasting Phoenix Brass.
Musical Director, Mr David Watson, spoke of the number of people who had worked tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the past twelve months to ensure that the band ran smoothly. David then announced the awards and David Hayward presented the trophies. John Miles received the Musical Director’s Award for his role as the band’s Webmaster; Sam Walley received the Young Player of the Year award. The Musician of the Year Award was presented to Helen Parkin. Carole Silk received the Friends of Phoenix Award for her superb work supporting the band. The Nora Edwards Award was presented to Claire Newcombe.
After the official part of the evening, guests let their hair down and danced to the sounds of Brilliant Disguise.
